Are you looking at your screen? The street is empty outside. The sky is blue and there are no planes in the air. The smell of local restaurants disappeared. The businessmen are not shaking their hands. So what should you do? It’s time to invest in working from your home. Do you want to become your own boss?
First, it’s important to have a laptop or a mobile phone where you can enter the Digital Kingdom. I have my own company where I sell courses and give Dutch online lessons to Polish immigrants to empower their integration process. I use a Space Gray MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports ($849,66). I recommend it for every Digital Nomad because it’s light to travel. It has a great keyboard to write your first business plan and is consumer-friendly. To protect it from coffee I recommend the Thule Macbook Sleeve ($56,92).
Now you can enter the Digital Kingdom. If you are on a budget it’s also possible to use your smartphone. I use an iPhone XS, 64GB, Space Gray ($479,99). But it’s quite expensive and for most digital nomads not necessary to buy it. There are of course cheaper smartphones on the market. For me, it’s useful for travel photography, quick money transfer with face ID and great video camera for filming online courses. One of my students bought the phone and is happy to use Imovie for editing videos about cryptocurrency. So it depends on your needs. For protection and to use your phone as a wallet I recommend the handmade flip case for iPhone XS ($7,99).
It’s time to start with building your online business. There are many ways to work from home. You can work for someone remotely. Especially now with the Coronavirus pandemic. However, in my opinion, it’s also nice to start your own side way hustle. I’m a student in my fourth year but I was able to pay my bills from my company CN Coaching & Nederlands. I started with books about entrepreneurship to build my business step by step. I recommend the following books to read during your lock time at home. The authors of these books changed my life. Hopefully one day I can publish my own.
You have a backpack full of knowledge and a laptop or smartphone to start. But then the journey actually starts. You need to make a financial plan and make choices about what’s necessary for your start-up. For me, it’s important to store data safely on a hard drive to have a back-up. I use a LaCie Rugged 4TB USB-C ($149,94). It’s shockproof when it falls, password protected and water-resistant. Perfect when you have kids or pets that can eat your data.
If you want to start teaching online or make digital courses I recommend investing in Bose Soundlink Around-Ear Wireless Headphones ($229,00). So you can isolate your self working on your business from the Coronavirus anxiety. Further, it’s nice to have a USB Microphone ($34,99) when you want to connect with your students and make online courses. For indoor and outdoor vlogging you can use the DJI OSOMO Mobile 3 ($119,00). Your shots will become more professional because you can use different functions than on your smartphone like hyperlapse hype and active track during sports. If you stay only in lock-down than you can use the Phone Tripod Linkcool ($15,99). It can also transform into a kind of gorilla pod with flexible legs and you can take pictures or video’s from a distance.
Now you are ready to give lessons, create online courses, start your own Youtube channel, a travel blog or start trading in cryptocurrencies. There are a lot more digital possibilities. If you get your first clients I recommend the Transferwise application where you can exchange currencies from almost everywhere in the world or PayPal to receive international payments. Don’t forget to clean your hands and equipment with the Screen Mom Cleaner Kit ($9,99), because you don’t want to let Coronavirus disturb your online business!
If you have any idea’s how to start your own business that you want to share with other digital nomads just comment below! Keep safe and let’s travel online to a world of digital possibilities.
